In this piece, we'll explore how to use Bing’s new search tool, discuss its various applications, and understand why it's gaining popularity so quickly. Bing's integration not only simplifies the user experience but also enhances it, providing a smooth route for knowledge exploration in our digital world. Navigating Bing's new chat feature with ease When you visit Bing.com, you'll notice a familiar setup with a new feature: a “Chat” option at the top of the page. This lets you start your search either the usual way, in the search box, or by clicking the “Chat” button, giving you the freedom to search how you prefer and switch between methods as you go. If you’re new to Bing, you’ll have a few chats before being asked to log in. Don’t worry if you don’t have a Microsoft account - you can quickly set one up with your preferred email address and then get right back to your search. One thing to keep in mind: you can use up to 5 prompts in a single chat. After that, you’ll need to clear the chat to keep searching. This new feature offers a blend of traditional and chat-based search to make finding what you need even easier. Revolutionizing real-time research Bing Chat, empowered by GPT-4—the latest and most advanced language model from ChatGPT—delivers responses that are strikingly human-like. - Evolution of the Coaching Industry & Adaptation of Coach Education
In a recent article by Jonathan Passmore and Woody Woodward (2023), they explore how coaching has evolved, tracing its roots from historical origins to the contemporary age of “digital coaching” and “productization.” They examine the ramifications of these changes on the coaching industry, with a specific emphasis on their impact on coaching education and training. Join us as we explore shifts in the coaching industry and the necessary adaptations needed in coaching education to meet these evolving demands. A new phase of coaching Passmore and Woodward outline that there have been three distinct phases of coaching between 1990 and 2020: “Pre-profession” — characterized by “ad hoc and non-qualification-based training.” “Practice-based professionalization” — marked by “small-scale coach providers” adhering to “professional body competencies.” “Evidence-based professionalization” — involving “university-based coach education programs” emphasizing “evidence-based and research-informed training.” Today, Passmore and Woodward believe that the coaching profession is entering a transformative fourth phase, a “new shift,” driven by the rapid growth of digital coaching in the post-pandemic era. “Productization” — the widespread reach of coaching services due to the advancements of AI and digital coaching technology. Passmore and Woodward indicate that this shift signifies a transition from "professionalization to productization." Consequently, they call upon coach educators and trainers to reconsider and modernize coach education in response to this new coaching era (Passmore & Woodward, 2023). Productization and the digital coach In the past five years, a variety of new coaching services have emerged, blending technology and scientific insights to reshape the executive coaching landscape. Passmore and Woodward categorize these innovations into three groups: “Digital coaching platforms” — organizations offer the “convenience of online” coaching services. “Coaching software providers” — programs used by executive coaches to facilitate digital coaching sessions “AI Coachbots” — devices that provide “computerized coaching conversations” potentially replacing the need for a human coach, though may be used in conjunction with one. The rise of these new innovations can be largely attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, which created the conditions for digital coaching to become widespread. Passmore and Woodward state that in the post-pandemic world, “digital coaching began to scale rapidly… As a result, a whole new industry emerged which many have referred to as the digital coaching technology services industry, or digital coaching for short.” The digitization of coaching has also expanded the scalability and reach of coaching services, ushering in a global clientele. Consequently, the demand for “more coaches,” specifically those who are “talented and qualified individuals” who understand the “practice and the science of coaching,” has also increased. In light of these developments, Passmore and Woodward anticipate heightened competition in the coaching industry. They state that clients seeking coaching services “will require more knowledgeable” coaches and “ever higher standards in coach qualifications.” They also predict an increased focus on differentiating one’s coaching services from other competitors and “evidence of impact and predictive data” (Passmore & Woodward, 2023). Adapting coach education Ultimately, the productization of coaching via the digital coach is a call to action for coach educators and trainers. Passmore and Woodward argue that educators “must place a greater emphasis on science research and technology” in order to “foster more critical thinking” as the coaching field evolves. There are six key areas they believe are critical to the successful training of evidence-based professional coaches: “Working in digital environment”s — coach education should include discussions of the pros, cons, development, use, impact, and ethics of AI in coaching and business. “Leveraging the power of technology” in the coaching industry — coaches should be taught how to use new tools and technologies (such as AI and digital coaching platforms) in their coaching profession. “Developing deeper self-awareness” — recent research has pointed to the importance of self-awareness for not only business leaders but also coaches themselves (Passmore & Woodward, 2023; Bachkirova, 2011, Carden, Passmore, & Jones, 2022; Carden, Jones & Passmore, 2021). “Development of self-care” — encourage coaches to “meet other coaches, share experiences,” “build relationships,” and prepare their “network” within the coaching community. Education programs and training should also include “supervision and mentoring” for developing coaches. Teaching a “wider understanding of organizational context” — educate and train coaches so that they have a “strong grounding in organizational systems” to aid in the diagnosis of challenges and goals. Developing “generic business skills” — “many coaches feel this is a missing ingredient” in the coach training and education programs currently offered. For coach program managers specifically, Passmore and Woodward note the importance of developing skills in areas such as “procurement,” “contracting,” “managing,” and “evaluating the quality of coaching and its impact” in different areas. For coaches specifically focused on service roles, education should include an “exploration of the service function” including areas such as “proposals, recruitment, management,” “supervision,” “evaluation,” and coach “impact” (Passmore and Woodward, 2023). A call to research collaboration In addition to addressing education and training needs, there is a call for collaboration between coaching organizations and educational institutions. Passmore and Woodward encourage university psychology departments and business schools to partner with digital providers and professional bodies to conduct high-quality research studies. This collaboration would harness the strengths of academic coaching bodies and the expansive reach of digital coaching platforms, ultimately enhancing research quality and impact (Passmore & Woodward, 2023). The main takeaway In the ever-evolving coaching industry, it's crucial for coach education and training to adapt and align with the current requirements of aspiring executive coaches. Spurred on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the coaching industry is rapidly moving towards what Passmore and Woodward call the “productization” of coaching by digital means. To best address these changes, coach educators and trainers are encouraged to adopt a curriculum that includes topics such as “working in digital environments,” how coaches can use new technologies and AI, self-awareness development, self-care development, “organizational context,” and “generic business skills” (Passmore & Woodward, 2023). Furthermore, academic and research organizations in the coaching industry are encouraged to pair with digital coaching platforms to further advance their research efficacy and impact (Passmore & Woodward, 2023). - The Future of Digital Coaching: A Critical Review
Jonathan Passmore and David Tee published in “Coaching Today” their review of the continually evolving digital coaching industry. In their review, they discuss different types of digital coaching and offer guidance on how to select a digital coaching platform or software. Below we discuss their review, sharing the key insights and takeaways most important for executive coaches. The rise of digital coaching The COVID-19 pandemic served as a pivotal moment for the coaching industry, igniting a surge in the adoption of digital coaching methodologies. With more than 80% of coaches transitioning to online coaching in 2021, this shift is poised to become a lasting trend (Passmore, 2021). Digital coaches cite the convenience of digital interactions, reduced travel costs (leading to increased income on average), reduced time loss commuting, and increased flexibility as reasons they favor digital coaching. Furthermore, the ICF’s 2023 Global Coaching Study echoes these findings, stating that “the coaching profession continued to expand at a robust pace” following the COVID-19 pandemic. As the coaching landscape continues to evolve, this digital revolution has reshaped the industry, making it more accessible and adaptable for both coaches and clients than ever before (Passmore & Tee, 2023). What is digital coaching? Passmore and Tee define digital coaching as “a technology-based, live, coach-client collaboration, using audio and visual channels of communication, enabled by secure digital communications protocols, which enables scalable and measurable outcomes for individuals and organizations” (2023). According to Passmore and Tee, “three players dominate the market: EZREA, BetterUp, and CoachHub” (2023). However, there are a variety of digital coaching organizations, many of which focus on specific clientele needs. Digital coaching platforms vs. coaching software providers Passmore and Tee identify two types of digital coaching: digital coaching platforms and coaching software providers. Digital coaching platforms are “effectively online coaching providers. They provide coaches both with access to their platform and with clients.” They set rates of pay and do a majority of the “behind the scenes work” such as collecting payments, managing “corporate client relationships,” winning coaching contracts, compliance, often times insurance, GDPR, sustainability, and anti-slavery policies (Passmore & Tee, 2023). Coaching Software Providers are more akin to a “club.” With these organizations, coaches set their rates, but are responsible for finding their own clients and performing the necessary “behind the scenes” operational work. Coaching software providers make their money off of the “income derived from coaches” using their platform (Passmore & Tee, 2023). Selecting the right provider: 10 critical questions Passmore and Tee provide readers with ten critical questions to consider before choosing a digital coaching platform or software. What do I want to get from the relationship? Do you want clients provided to you? If so, what type of clients? How much “behind the scenes” operational and administrative work such as “management and billing” are you willing to pass on to the organization? What criteria do they set for new coaches? Is performance monitored? Are specific credentials required? Are there membership fees or dues? What insurance do I need? Do you need “professional indemnity insurance”? What insurance does the organization have in place and what risks are being passed to you? What rates per hour do they offer? What currency is used to pay coaches? Will there be an exchange rate difference or fee? Are there bonuses, commissions, or raises? Is the pay rate fixed per year? What privacy standards and ethical practices does the platform operate? How is personal data collected and used? Are coaching conversations recorded? What are general “privacy and security policies”? How long is personal data stored? What restriction does the provider apply to your other work? Is exclusivity required for participation in the organization? In what ways does the provider use evidence-based research to underpin its work? How has research “informed the development” of the organization’s coaching model? What research studies has the organization completed? What arrangements does the platform offer for training, development, and supervision? Are there learning plans provided to coaches? What courses, events, activities, or seminars are available to coaches? Are learning resources available for a fee or are they included in membership? What values guide the business/organization? What are some examples of the organization “living out” their values? Are there case studies available for review? What do other coaches say about their experience working for them? Ask LinkedIn connections about their experiences Examine review boards for additional insights (Passmore & Tee, 2023) A note for sole practitioners While the digital realm of executive coaching continues to expand, Passmore and Tee encourage “sole practitioners” to “think about the unique differentiators” they provide their clients. They state that sole practitioners must “provide personalized services such as outdoor coaching or psychometrics, focus on a market niche, and draw on their black book of contacts” (Passmore & Tee, 2023). Conclusion In summary, the digital coaching industry has witnessed significant growth since the pandemic, with over 80% of coaches transitioning to online coaching (Passmore, 2021). Passmore and Tee's critical review provides valuable insights for executive coaches, covering digital coaching types, platform choices, and crucial questions to ask when selecting a provider. As the industry continues to evolve, this review serves as a valuable resource for coaches navigating the digital coaching landscape. The original study can be found here. - Customer Delight: Dispelling Myths and Embracing the Imperative
In the world of commerce, where data-driven strategies often reign supreme, the true essence of business success lies in an elusive yet powerful concept: customer delight. In the pursuit of sustainable growth and profitability, executives, business leaders, and CEOs often find themselves entangled in the intricacies of profit margins and market shares. However, beneath the surface, the art of customer delight holds the key to unlocking unparalleled success. Let us embark on a journey to understand what people often misconstrue about customer delight and why its significance cannot be overstated. The myth: satisfaction equals delight A common misconception that many in the corporate realm harbor is equating customer satisfaction with customer delight. While customer satisfaction is essential and ensures a baseline level of contentment, it only scratches the surface of what businesses can achieve. Customer delight, on the other hand, transcends satisfaction and enters the realm of creating memorable experiences that foster long-term loyalty and advocacy. Executives sometimes fall into the trap of focusing solely on addressing customer complaints and concerns, believing that resolving issues is enough to retain patronage. However, the true power of delight lies in proactively exceeding customer expectations. This requires a deep understanding of customer needs, preferences, and pain points, enabling businesses to anticipate desires and astonish with personalized solutions. Human touch in a data-centric world In today's data-driven landscape, numbers often dictate decisions. While metrics such as Net Promoter Score (NPS) and Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT) provide valuable insights, relying solely on data can lead to a disconnect from the human aspect of customer relationships. CEOs and business leaders must recognize that customer delight is an emotional journey that extends beyond metrics. Fostering genuine connections with customers requires active listening, empathetic engagement, and a commitment to understanding their stories. Executives must resist the urge to become slaves to metrics and instead empower their teams to build authentic, human-centered relationships that create lasting bonds. Delight as a growth catalyst Delighted customers don't just return; they rave. Word-of-mouth marketing, spurred by these advocates, can dramatically magnify a brand's outreach. Moreover, a steadfast commitment to customer delight fosters innovation, positioning companies at the vanguard of industry evolution. This proactive stance not only drives growth but also cements a brand's stature as an industry trendsetter. Striking the balance: delight, pricing, and value While the pursuit of customer delight rests on the foundation of exceeding expectations, a delicate balance must be maintained to ensure sustainable growth and profitability. Executives, business leaders, and CEOs must be cognizant that exceeding expectations too far may inadvertently lead to leaving money on the table. Imagine a scenario where a company consistently goes above and beyond, offering lavish services that far surpass customer expectations. While this initially elicits joy and satisfaction, it can potentially undermine the financial health of the business. The cost of maintaining extravagant offerings must be factored into pricing structures, lest profit margins become thin or unsustainable. It is important to recognize that delight need not always manifest through grand gestures. Incremental improvements and small surprises can often be more impactful and cost-effective. By focusing on enhancing key touchpoints and addressing pain points, companies can deliver meaningful experiences without necessitating drastic increases in prices. The delight economy: pricing for perceived value Striking the right balance between delight and pricing requires a strategic approach. Businesses should consider the value delivered to customers and the corresponding increase in willingness to pay. Pricing decisions should be reflective of the enhanced experience, while still capturing the perceived value and maintaining profitability. Executives should be cautious not to commoditize their products or services by offering extravagant features without appropriate pricing adjustments. Customers may come to expect these premium offerings as the new norm, making it challenging to scale back without damaging customer relationships. Ultimately, the key is to align the level of delight with the value proposition, ensuring that customers recognize and appreciate the added value while the business remains financially viable. By consistently providing incremental delight and modest price adjustments, companies can foster long-term loyalty and sustainable growth. In the journey toward customer delight, executives must be mindful of the fine balance between exceeding expectations and pricing for value. This equilibrium ensures that both customers and the business thrive, creating a win-win scenario that propels the organization toward unparalleled success. Embracing the path forward: 20 key questions The pursuit of customer delight is not an ancillary strategy but a pivotal force that propels businesses forward. It is the bedrock upon which lasting relationships, exponential growth, and industry leadership are built. As the corporate landscape evolves, those who grasp the essence of customer delight will undoubtedly emerge as champions of innovation and prosperity. As you or your clients embark on the journey of customer delight, consider pondering the following 20 questions to ensure alignment with the overall business strategy. How do you define customer delight within our organization? Understanding how executives perceive customer delight lays the foundation for aligning strategies and expectations. Beyond resolving issues, how are we actively exceeding customer expectations? Encouraging executives to explore proactive ways of surprising and delighting customers can drive innovation and differentiation. Are we investing in understanding our customers' emotional needs and aspirations? Highlighting the importance of empathy and emotional connection can shift the focus from numbers to genuine customer relationships. What strategies do we have in place to create personalized experiences for our customers? Emphasizing personalization demonstrates a commitment to treating customers as individuals, not just data points. How do we measure the emotional impact of our interactions with customers? Encouraging discussion about capturing emotional metrics can lead to a more holistic understanding of customer sentiment. Do we have a system in place to collect and leverage customer feedback for continuous improvement? Executives should consider how feedback loops are integrated into business processes to drive refinement and innovation. Can you provide an example of a time when we turned an unhappy customer into a delighted advocate? Sharing success stories can illustrate the power of customer delight in action and inspire similar initiatives. What role does our company culture play in delivering customer delight? Discussing how the organization's values and culture impact customer interactions highlights the importance of aligning internal and external perceptions. Are we actively encouraging our employees to take ownership of customer relationships? Empowering employees to make decisions that prioritize customer happiness can lead to more genuine and meaningful interactions. How do our customer delight efforts align with our long-term growth and brand strategy? Connecting customer delight to business objectives emphasizes its strategic importance and impact on the bottom line. What are the key touchpoints in our customer journey where we have the opportunity to create delight? Identifying specific moments in the customer journey for intentional delight can guide resource allocation and decision-making. Are we measuring the lifetime value of delighted customers compared to merely satisfied ones? Encouraging executives to consider the financial benefits of cultivating delighted, loyal customers can provide a compelling business case. Are our customers consistently expressing surprise at the level of service and features we offer compared to our competitors? If customers frequently mention being amazed by what they receive at a given price point, it could signal that the business is overdelivering without justifying the pricing. Have we conducted pricing sensitivity analyses to understand how customers perceive the value of our offerings in relation to their price? Exploring customers' willingness to pay for the current level of service can provide insights into whether pricing adjustments are needed. Do we have a clear understanding of the cost implications of our customer delight initiatives? Assessing the financial impact of the added features and services can reveal whether the current pricing structure remains sustainable. Are our profit margins consistent with industry standards, considering the value we provide to customers? Comparing profit margins to industry benchmarks can shed light on whether the business is effectively monetizing its offerings. Have we surveyed our customers to understand their perception of the value they receive compared to the price they pay? Directly asking customers about their perception of value can provide valuable insights into whether adjustments are warranted. Do we have a strategy in place to periodically review and adjust our pricing based on customer feedback and market trends? Regularly revisiting pricing in light of evolving customer expectations and industry dynamics can prevent underpricing. Have we considered introducing tiered pricing models that align with different levels of customer delight and value? Exploring tiered pricing options can provide customers with choices and better align pricing with value received. Are our operational costs increasing significantly due to the high level of service and features we provide? If operational costs are rising disproportionately, it may indicate that pricing adjustments are necessary to maintain profitability. The main takeaway The journey towards customer delight is an ongoing endeavor that demands a shift in mindset and approach. Executives, business leaders, and CEOs must recognize that delight transcends satisfaction and requires a deep understanding of customer aspirations. By nurturing authentic connections and infusing human touch into business operations, companies can position themselves for unparalleled success. Copyright © 2023 by Arete Coach™ LLC. - Research Review: Leveraging AI-Enhanced Video Feedback in Coach Development
In the July 2023 issue of "Coaching: An International Journal of Theory, Research and Practice," a study explored the pros and cons of using AI-enhanced video feedback after coaching sessions. The research highlighted that such feedback stimulates deep reflection, increases self-awareness, and encourages behavioral adjustments, skill improvement, and enhanced confidence in coaches. Read on to delve deeper into the nuances of the findings and understand the broader implications for the coaching industry. The study Adopting a “subjectivist” and “interpretivist empirical approach,” researchers recruited 15 coaches, spanning diverse experience levels, via social media and university networks (Bridgeman & Giraldez-Hayes, 2023). Each participating coach was instructed to “record 4 one-hour sessions over several weeks” and upload the recordings to Ovida, “a web-based software which uses AI to provide data analysis of recorded online coaching conversations.” Ovida shared data analysis regarding the following data points: “share of voice percentage (ratio of client to coach speech), question rate of the coach, open-closed question ratio percentage of questions versus statements, and coach interruption rate.” After a minimum of 3 weeks, participants were individually interviewed in a semi-structured format that examined how coaches felt during the video recorded coaching sessions, their reactions to watching the video recordings, their reactions to the data analysis, how they might use video recordings in supervision, and their overall experience (Bridgeman & Giraldez-Hayes, 2023). In the research, the tool utilized for AI-enhanced video feedback was Ovida. As dThis software harnesses AI to analyze recorded online coaching dialogues, as described by Bridgeman & Giraldez-Hayes (2023). Essential analytical parameters included the spread of speech, the frequency of questions, the balance between open-ended and closed questions, and moments of interruption. Drawing a parallel to sales experts who study past calls, coaches employed Ovida to look back at their sessions (Bridgeman & Giraldez-Hayes, 2023). The findings A meta-analysis revealed that video feedback was equally effective for the ongoing personal growth of seasoned practitioners as it was for novices (Hammoud et al., 2012). This research further emphasized that emphasizing strengths in video feedback studies reinforces positive actions and that such feedback can aid in diminishing unfavorable traits (Hammoud et al., 2012). Studies indicate that video feedback serves as an instrumental tool for self-reflection and self-awareness (Bridgeman & Girzledez-Hayes, 2023). These attributes can significantly enhance an executive coach's proficiency, skill evolution, and overall effectiveness in their role. The benefits of AI-enhanced video feedback Self-awareness and client rapport Researchers state that “all participants found that through reviewing the video and data of their coaching sessions, as part of their reflective practice, they derived insights into their coaching style and how they build rapport with their clients.” When participants used Ovida to observe their own behavior, they were able to “see how they were coming across” to their coaching clients. The video analysis offered an “objective viewpoint” as well as an opportunity to examine how their coaching methods affected their client in real-time (Bridgeman & Giraldez-Hayes, 2023). Focus on coach development AI-driven data facilitated targeted skill refinement. Researchers state that all coach participants “reported making specific changes to their coaching skills in sessions following reflective review, resulting from insights derived from reviewing the combined video and data” (Bridgeman & Giraldez-Hayes, 2023). This continual behavioral modification and AI reporting also served as a “useful tool” for coach participants to stay “on-track” with their coaching goals. It also showed them “how the changes [they made] affected their performance and their clients.” Furthermore, the ability to continually monitor progress and see their own development gave coach participants additional confidence in their coaching ability (Bridgeman & Giraldez-Hayes, 2023). The challenges of AI-enhanced video feedback Striving for perfection When using AI-enhanced video feedback, coaches had to monitor their own “inner critic.” Researchers state that “the ‘inner critic’ risk led to participants focusing on negative aspects of their coaching sessions… leading to feelings of share or striving for perfection… Most participants reflected that their own mindset may have had to do with these negative attitudes than the software itself.” Because of this, having a “growth mindset” was identified as a “potential mediator for this sense of judgment.” Nervousness A second challenge using AI-enhanced video feedback was that coaches were, at times, uneasy with the new technology. They reported feeling distracted, or nervous, that the session was being recorded. However, researchers note that “despite this anxiety participants and clients pressed on and generally noted relaxing the more they got used to using the technology and recognized its potential.” Missed context Lastly, participants reported that, in some cases, the AI software failed to “understand the context” of their coaching conversation. Bridgeman and Giraldez-Hayes state that “most participants noted that certain elements of the data analysis missed nuance through the software’s inability to recognize the context… others noted a need for the software to differentiate between the coaching skills of questioning and summarizing.” Nonetheless, participants still agreed that AI-enhanced video feedback was a “useful tool” but that “it was up to the human coach, perhaps with peers or a supervisor, to then interpret that data towards development objectives.” Practical implications The research underscores the promise of AI-enhanced video feedback in advancing the coaching sector, aiding executive coaches in refining their skills. Bridgeman and Giraldez-Hayes acknowledge that while video review might be a challenging experience, its merits are undeniable. They observed tangible advantages such as “raised self-awareness,” “improved reflective practice,” improved “communication competence,” reinforcement of “positive behaviors,” identifiable “less desirable behaviors,” increased coach confidence, and overall coach development (Bridgeman & Giraldez-Hayes, 2023). Synergies with sports and sales practices Building on the discussion in the article and the insights from researchers Bridgeman and Giraldez-Hayes, it's evident that video feedback has long-standing roots in various domains. According to Bridgeman and Giraldez-Hayes, video feedback has been used in “sports coaching… for decades”—allowing both coaches and athletes to revisit and refine their performance through enhanced self-awareness (Bridgeman & Giraldez-Hayes, 2023 & Wilson, 2008). Beyond sports, Bridgeman and Giraldez-Hayes explain that its applications have expanded to fields like “communication teaching,” “medicine,” and even the training of “therapists and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) practitioners” (Bridgeman & Giraldez-Hayes, 2023 & Wilson, 2008). Analyzing recorded coaching conversations echoes the evaluation of sales calls and the positive outcomes it offers. In sales, AI-supported analysis of calls has proven to be a highly effective method of increasing profits. According to the Harvard Business Review, Aviso’s “conversational intelligence” program “which captures information from calls, web meetings, and email” to give users “deeper insights into the status of all forecast deals” was responsible for “average yearly improvements” of “$150 million in total estimated revenue” and “more than $1 million in CRM cost savings.” Harvard Business Review also shares that another AI assistant program that analyzed transcripts of “earnings calls” has generated “more than $1 billion in sales over the past two years” (Dickie, Grosberg, Shapiro, & Trailer, 2022). Platforms such as Chorus and Gong, along with newer tools like Fathom and Otter, have revolutionized the sales sector by providing in-depth insights. These analytical tools, much like video feedback, underscore the potential for refining coaching techniques. They not only offer invaluable feedback but also promote effective supervision, ensuring that coaches consistently deliver their best. If sales teams have harnessed the power of these tools to achieve remarkable results, the coaching industry too stands on the brink of a transformative leap. The main takeaway The integration of AI analysis into coaching sessions via video feedback serves as a potent tool for executive coach development. It enhances self-awareness, facilitates targeted skill improvement, and ultimately bolsters coach competence and confidence. Yet, effective supervision and human interpretation remain integral to AI-enhanced video feedback's success (Bridgeman & Giraldez-Hayes, 2023). While technology offers promising advancements, it's essential to remember that the synergy of human expertise and AI innovation is what truly drives transformative outcomes in the coaching realm. In recent years, we've witnessed the meteoric rise of artificial intelligence (AI) — from being a concept in sci-fi novels to a tangible force driving business transformations. The AI landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace, embedding itself into almost every aspect of the business world. However, as AI becomes a more integral part of our workplace, the pressing question arises: How do we harness its power responsibly? The answer lies in crafting comprehensive policies that ensure AI's integration is both productive and principled. The potential and promise of AI Artificial Intelligence (AI) represents more than just the latest addition to a company's technological toolkit; it signifies a transformative shift in how businesses operate, strategize, and innovate. No longer confined to the realms of science fiction, AI has permeated the very fabric of modern commerce, reshaping traditional paradigms and introducing new methodologies. At the heart of this evolution lie two fundamental promises AI offers to the business world: Efficiency and productivity: Through automation and sophisticated data analysis, AI can expedite tasks, eliminate human error, and make predictive recommendations, streamlining operations across sectors. Innovation and competitive advantage: Beyond efficiency, AI offers businesses the chance to innovate, whether by personalizing consumer experiences, optimizing supply chains, or even creating entirely new business models. This innovation can carve out significant competitive advantages in saturated markets. In essence, AI isn't merely a technological advancement; it's a strategic imperative, offering businesses the dual prospects of operational excellence and pioneering innovation. For more information on the potential of AI, explore recent articles published by AreteCoach.io, here. The risks and challenges The adage "With great power comes great responsibility" has never been more relevant than in the context of Artificial Intelligence (AI). As the capabilities of AI expand, pushing boundaries and reshaping industries, the onus is on businesses and stakeholders to ensure its ethical, secure, and responsible deployment. This is not just about harnessing AI's potential but about navigating the intricate maze of challenges it brings to the forefront. Ethical concerns: The specter of AI bias is real. Without proper checks, AI can perpetuate and even amplify societal biases. Transparent algorithms are not just a buzzword; they're essential to ensure fairness and avoid discriminatory outcomes. Security and privacy: AI systems, being data-driven, can become potential targets for cyber-attacks. Crafting an effective AI policy An effective AI policy isn't just a document or a set of guidelines—it's the foundational pillar that ensures the ethical, secure, and productive integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into a business framework. As we stand on the cusp of an era where AI will become ubiquitous in every facet of business, having a robust policy becomes paramount. Such a policy acts as a compass, guiding companies through the maze of AI implementation, ensuring that while they leverage the technology's vast potential, they do so responsibly and ethically. In constructing this pivotal policy, several critical elements emerge: Alignment with company values: Every AI application, be it a chatbot or a data analytics tool, should resonate with the company's core values, mission, and ethical considerations. Transparency and accountability: It's crucial to have clear protocols detailing how AI decisions are made. Moreover, there should always be a human accountable for AI actions and decisions. Continuous learning and adaptation: The world of AI is ever-evolving. Policies should be dynamic, revisited, and revised periodically to stay relevant and effective. Crafting an effective AI policy is both an art and a science. It requires a deep understanding of the technology and its implications, combined with a vision for the company's future and a commitment to ethical, responsible business practices. Key components of a robust AI policy A strong AI policy isn't just a single, unchanging set of rules. Instead, it's a collection of guidelines that cover various aspects of AI use and its effects on the business. As we stand at the intersection of technology and human ethics, ensuring that AI is used responsibly becomes crucial. To achieve this, a comprehensive AI policy should weave together several integral components: Data governance: A clear framework for data collection, storage, and usage, emphasizing user privacy and data security. Stakeholder involvement: A successful policy is built with inputs from all stakeholders, including employees, customers, and shareholders. Their insights can help make the policy more holistic. Evaluation and oversight: Regular audits and evaluations ensure that the AI tools in use adhere to the set policies and remain effective and safe. A robust AI policy is a living document, one that adapts, evolves, and grows. It's a reflection of a company's commitment to harnessing AI's potential responsibly, ensuring that technological advancements go hand in hand with ethical considerations and societal well-being. The role of leadership in AI implementation Leaders are not just figureheads in the journey of AI integration; they are the driving force behind ensuring that AI is incorporated thoughtfully and ethically into business operations. Their influence and decision-making shape the trajectory of AI deployment in several key ways: Vision and strategy: Leaders should chart out how AI aligns with the company's broader goals and objectives, ensuring cohesion in its application. Cultural adaptation: Leadership should foster a culture that embraces innovation and continuous learning, making the integration of AI a seamless affair. Ethical leadership: Leaders must set the tone at the top, modeling ethical behavior and decisions, ensuring that AI is used responsibly across the board. While AI might be powered by algorithms and data, its successful and responsible integration hinges on human leadership. Leaders, with their vision, decision-making, and influence, are the anchors ensuring that AI serves the organization's goals while adhering to ethical and operational standards. Examples of AI policies As companies integrate AI into their operations, it becomes essential to have clear AI policies to guide its responsible and effective use. Here are some examples of AI policies that a company might establish. Ethical use of AI: AI systems will not be used to promote or amplify biases, discrimination, or prejudices. AI applications will prioritize human well-being and avoid causing harm. Transparency and explainability: AI models, especially those in critical decision-making roles, should be interpretable, with clear explanations available for their decisions. Stakeholders should be informed when interacting with AI systems, e.g., customers should know if they are speaking with a chatbot. Privacy and data protection: AI systems will adhere to data protection regulations like GDPR, CCPA, etc. Personal data used to train AI models will be anonymized to protect individual privacy. Oversight and accountability: All AI systems will have a designated human overseer responsible for their outcomes. Regular audits will be conducted to ensure that AI systems are performing as intended and adhering to company policies. Safety and robustness: AI systems will be designed to handle unexpected situations without malfunctioning. Regular testing and validation will be done to ensure the reliability of AI applications. Employee and stakeholder involvement: Employees will be involved in the decision-making process concerning the deployment of AI tools that affect their roles. Feedback mechanisms will be established for stakeholders to report concerns or issues related to AI systems. Training and education: Employees will be provided with training resources to understand and work effectively with AI tools. Decision-makers will be educated about the capabilities and limitations of AI to make informed choices. Fair competition: AI will not be used for unfair competitive practices, like scraping competitors' data without permission. AI applications will comply with antitrust regulations. Environmental responsibility: The environmental footprint of AI (considering data centers' energy consumption) will be monitored, and efforts will be made to minimize its impact. Continuous monitoring and iteration: AI policies will be revisited and updated regularly to stay relevant with technological advancements and societal changes. Collaboration and openness: Where possible, the company will contribute to open-source AI projects and share non-sensitive research to promote collaborative growth in the AI community. Limitations and boundaries: Clearly defined boundaries will be set for AI's decision-making capacities, ensuring that certain critical decisions remain a human prerogative. These policies serve as guiding principles, ensuring that AI is used responsibly, ethically, and effectively. Every company should tailor these policies based on their industry, operations, and the specific challenges and opportunities that AI presents to them. The main takeaway The AI journey is a marathon, not a sprint. As it continues to evolve and redefine the business landscape, the importance of proactive and responsible policy-making becomes even more critical. It’s time to rise to the occasion. Engage with the intricacies of AI, seek expert insights, and prioritize crafting robust AI policies. By doing so, you're not just future-proofing your business but also paving the way for a more ethical and effective AI-driven world. Copyright © 2023 by Arete Coach LLC. All rights reserved.

Journaling: Personal reflection time to note down thoughts, feelings, and learnings. Feedback apps: Digital tools that allow for real-time feedback during sessions. Cross-functional learning: breaking down barriers Silos can be the death of innovation. By facilitating discussions and problem-solving sessions across different functions, you allow for the transfer of knowledge and best practices. This cross-pollination not only leads to more robust strategies but also fosters a sense of unity and shared purpose. For example, teams can conduct the following to break down barriers: Job shadowing: Team members spend a few hours shadowing colleagues from different departments. Cross-team challenges: Tackling a common problem with members from diverse departments. Panel discussions: Representatives from different functions discuss challenges and opportunities. Icebreakers and team building: crafting connections While the primary goal of a retreat is strategic planning, the bonds forged during the process are invaluable. Engaging icebreakers can help participants get to know each other beyond their job titles. Team building activities, from trust exercises to fun challenges, can solidify these connections, ensuring a cohesive team long after the retreat concludes. Consider the following team building activities. For additional ideas, read Energizer Activities for Teams: Boosting Performance and Productivity. Two truths and a lie: A fun game where participants guess which of the three statements is false. Building challenges: Teams use a random assortment of materials to construct a structure or device. Personality tests: Tools like TriMetrixDNA, Myers-Briggs, or DISC to help understand and appreciate team dynamics. Nurturing creativity: beyond the conventional In a rapidly changing business landscape, thinking outside the box is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Activities focused on idea generation, concept mapping, or even artistic expression can unlock hidden creative potential, leading to groundbreaking strategies. For example, try the following: Idea speed dating: Rapidly sharing ideas in a one-on-one setting, rotating every few minutes. Creative workshops: Host sessions on topics like design thinking or innovation frameworks. Artistic expression: Encourage painting, music, or drama activities to encourage non-linear thinking. Relaxation and rejuvenation: the strategy of self-care All work and no play can lead to burnout. Interspersing intense sessions with breaks, relaxation exercises, or even short excursions can ensure that participants remain refreshed, alert, and engaged. After all, a well-rested mind is a creative mind. A few examples of activities include: Yoga or meditation sessions: Activities to relax the mind and body. Nature walks: Guided tours of the local flora and fauna, promoting relaxation and wonder. Spa or wellness activities: Massage, thermal baths, or other rejuvenating treatments to refresh participants. The main takeaway The right strategic planning retreat can be transformative. It's more than just a change of scenery or a series of activities. It's about creating a space where ideas flourish, where every voice matters, and where the future of the company is crafted collaboratively. As you plan your next retreat, consider integrating these engaging ideas. Not only will you emerge with a robust strategy, but also with a team that's more connected, inspired, and ready to face the future together. In a recent episode of the Arete Coach podcast, host Severin Sorensen and guest Dr. Travis Kemp, an executive coach and co-director of the Institute of Coaching and Consulting Psychology, embark on a deep exploration of the challenges leaders face in today's rapidly changing business environment. Dr. Kemp, who's also an adjunct professor at the University of South Australia, delves into the intricate concept of "Unfreezing learning, re-learning, and re-freezing new patterns." This phrase, frequently echoed in executive coaching and notably used by Severin during the episode, encapsulates the essence of what management guru Peter Drucker meant when he pronounced, “The only skill that will be important in the 21st century is the skill of learning new skills.” As business terrains evolve unpredictably, Drucker's insights resonate more profoundly. Dr. Kemp underscores the discomfort inherent in the re-learning process, which often becomes a deterrent for many. Yet, as Dr. Kemp articulates, the objective isn't to find solace in this discomfort but to get "better at tolerating the discomfort." With this in mind, the questions remain: why is re-learning so important, and how can seasoned leaders refresh their approach to executive leadership? Understanding Self-Awareness Researcher Tasha Eurich led a comprehensive study with over 5,000 participants to explore the intricacies of self-awareness. From this effort, two key insights emerged. Re-evaluating the role of experience Common wisdom suggests experience enhances judgment. However, Eurich's findings challenge this. Surprisingly, it was found that seasoned managers didn't always rate their leadership skills as accurately as newer managers. Moreover, a broader survey of 3,600 leaders revealed a tendency among senior figures to overestimate their abilities in areas like empathy and self-awareness (Eurich, 2018). Several important lessons arise from these insights: Experience vs. wisdom: Experience doesn't always lead to better judgment. This encourages a re-evaluation of long-held beliefs about expertise. The pitfalls of overconfidence: With more experience, there's a risk of becoming overconfident, leading to potential oversights. Continuous reflection: Regardless of how long one has been in a role, continuous feedback and introspection are crucial. A wider trend in leadership: Research suggests that overestimating one's abilities might be a common trend among senior leaders. A relevant anecdote On Episode #1140 of the Arete Coach Podcast, Severin Sorensen shared a moment of realization at a driving range. Believing he was "practicing," a stranger observed he was just reinforcing poor techniques. This story highlights the importance of quality over mere repetition in skill development. It serves as a reminder: shedding unproductive habits is key to fostering genuine growth. Strategies for unlearning old habits In today's dynamic business environment, Peter Drucker's assertion that the paramount skill of the 21st century is the ability to learn new skills holds profound resonance. As evidenced by Tasha Eurich's research, even seasoned leaders can sometimes be ensnared by the trappings of their past experiences, leading them to overestimate their prowess in areas like empathy and self-awareness. Yet, to remain agile and responsive, it's not just about acquiring new knowledge; it's equally vital to unlearn outdated habits that no longer serve us. Recognizing this, we've curated 10 transformative strategies that guide executives in shedding these entrenched patterns, enabling them to embrace the future with fresh perspectives and renewed vigor. Recognize the ice: self-awareness is key Before one can break free from the ice, it's imperative to first identify and acknowledge its presence. This begins with self-awareness. Leaders must introspectively assess their beliefs, values, habits, and strategies. To gauge your self-awareness, ask yourself the following questions: Are there strategies I've been deploying that no longer yield the expected results? Do I resist new methodologies or technologies because they're unfamiliar or seem too complex? Have I found myself saying, “This is how we've always done it”? If you answered 'yes' to any of these, you might be on icy terrain. Embrace the growth mindset Carol Dweck’s groundbreaking research on the “growth mindset” offers profound insights for leaders. By adopting a growth mindset, it is believed that abilities and intelligence can be developed. In focusing on having a growth mindset, leaders: Are open to feedback, even if it's critical. View challenges as opportunities rather than threats. Are willing to step outside their comfort zones. Understand that failure is part of the learning journey. By fostering a growth mindset, leaders can melt away old patterns and embrace the ever-evolving landscape of business. Cultivate curiosity Albert Einstein once remarked, "I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." Curiosity is the antithesis of stagnation. Leaders who are genuinely curious are constantly seeking to learn, understand, and explore. Ways to stimulate curiosity include: Attending seminars and workshops outside your domain of expertise. Engaging in discussions with younger employees to gain fresh perspectives. Exploring industries tangential to yours to seek cross-pollination of ideas. Seek diverse perspectives In a world that's more interconnected than ever, diversity is not just a buzzword; it's a competitive advantage. By actively seeking out and valuing diverse perspectives, leaders can shatter echo chambers and invite innovative solutions. To form and maintain a diverse perspective, consider: Forming advisory boards with members from different backgrounds and industries. Encouraging team members to share their unique insights and experiences. Collaborating with international teams or partners to understand global perspectives. Engage in continuous learning Executive education is no longer just a coveted asset but an essential cornerstone. As highlighted by Fast Company, CEOs dedicate nearly half of their time—a significant 43%—to activities that advance their objectives (Vozza, 2018). In an environment where leaders often play the role of ‘visionary,’ ongoing learning at the executive level remains important. Action steps include: Enrolling in executive education programs. Subscribing to thought leadership publications. Participating in peer-to-peer learning networks. Foster a culture of learning As leaders, your attitude towards learning will permeate the organization. Encouraging a culture where employees at all levels feel empowered to learn, innovate, and experiment can have profound impacts. Tactics to promote your culture of learning include: Offer learning and development opportunities to employees. Celebrate failures as learning experiences. Encourage cross-departmental collaborations for knowledge sharing. Challenge the status quo To truly unfreeze old patterns, leaders must be willing to challenge the status quo. This involves questioning existing systems, processes, and strategies, and being open to overhauling them if necessary. Practical steps include: Hosting regular brainstorming sessions where no idea is off-limits. Engaging external consultants to audit and provide fresh perspectives on operations. Implementing a system for employees to submit innovative ideas or solutions. Leverage technology In the digital age, technology is a catalyst for change. Leaders must be adept at leveraging technological advancements to drive business forward and break old patterns. Consider: Investing in AI and data analytics to gain deeper insights into business operations. Utilizing virtual reality or augmented reality for training and development. Engaging with tech start-ups to understand emerging trends and potential collaborations. Prioritize self-care Leadership, especially at the executive level, can be mentally taxing. Engaging in regular self-care not only rejuvenates the mind but can also lead to clearer thinking and decision-making. Consider: Adopting mindfulness or meditation practices. Ensuring regular physical exercise. Taking periodic breaks to disconnect and reflect. Stay connected with your 'Why' Lastly, always stay connected with your core purpose or 'why'. When leaders are clear about their purpose, they are better equipped to navigate challenges, adapt to changes, and break free from restrictive patterns. Reflect upon: The core values that drive you. The impact you wish to make in your industry. The legacy you want to leave behind. The main takeaway In the dynamic world of business, the ability to adapt, evolve, and break free from old patterns is not just advantageous; it's essential. By recognizing the ice, embracing a growth mindset, and continuously striving for learning and innovation, leaders can set both themselves and their organizations on a trajectory of sustained success. To all the executives, leaders, and business owners reading this: the time to unfreeze is now. Your organization, your team, and the future you envision depend on it. References Eurich, T. - Managing the Remote Workforce in 2023
In the dynamic post-pandemic environment, executives are faced with the intricate task of effectively managing remote workforces. With attention-grabbing headlines such as: “Woman fired after company uses keystroke technology to monitor her work from home,” “Even Zoom is making its staff return to the office,” and “The Evidence on Remote Work is Changing,” the complexities of this evolving landscape are undeniable. Managing the remote workforce is an equally challenging, evolving, and nuanced topic that demands a proactive approach that protects both the productivity and collaboration of an organization and its employees. Remote work productivity One of the most poignant concerns with managing the remote workforce is how managers and leaders should monitor employee productivity. Some estimates suggest that remote work might lead to a potential negative impact of up to ten percent on productivity (Woods & Ma, 2023). However, researcher Shen states in his research that “a negative but almost-negligible change in individual-level output of 0.5 percent” was present in the remote workforce. Additionally, a variety of companies such as Zoom have reevaluated their remote workforce policies due to productivity. Zoom states in their announcement to enforce a hybrid workplace policy: “...We’ll continue to leverage the entire Zoom platform to keep our employees and dispersed teams connected and working efficiently” (CNN Valinsky, 2023). While there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the level of productivity in the workplace versus at home, the conversation around productivity concerns continues to evolve. Strategies for navigating remote work management Due to the variance in the estimations regarding remote employee productivity versus in-person productivity, it is important for managers and business leaders to proactively consider ways in which they can determine if remote work is the best fit for their organization and protect the productivity of their business. Consider the following strategies. Evaluate the benefits of remote work According to Pew Research, employees report improved work-life balance and the ability to meet deadlines effectively (Parker, 2023). Hybrid employees feel trusted and valued when allowed to work remotely. Employers benefit from access to a global talent pool, reduced employee turnover, and potential savings in office space costs. These benefits are particularly important as employers struggle to find and retain employees in the post-pandemic workplace. (Gallup, 2023; Woods & Ma, 2023). Position-specific analysis Recognize that different roles have distinct demands and requirements. Because of this, it is important to consider the remote work capabilities of each individual job. Woods and Ma, in their NPR article “The evidence on remote work is changing,” state that although remote work has been reported to reduce productivity, “measuring productivity is tricky business” especially when considering that a majority of remote careers are “knowledge” based without measurable output. For example, they state that “in various studies, like the one observing police dispatchers, face-to-face meant workers could complete tasks faster.” While this evidence is not in favor of remote work, it is important to consider the differences between a police dispatcher and for example, a remotely employed engineer or customer service representative. With the wide range of variables unique to each job type, Woods and Ma conclude that although some careers may not benefit from remote work, “it seems remote work is here to stay” (Woods & Ma, 2023). What is important is making remote work, work, for each company and job position uniquely. Implement monitoring software To ensure accountability and productive use of time, consider employing monitoring software. Recent incidents, such as the case of an employee terminated due to low productivity and frequent absence (NY Post), highlight the need for tools that can monitor employee engagement and output. This safeguard helps maintain a productive remote work environment. For more on remote employee monitoring, read our article, “Monitoring the Remote Employee: Oversight or an Overstep?” Establish expectations According to the Society of Human Resource Management, SHRM, employers and managers should “set expectations early and often.” They share insight from Scott Bales, VP of delivery and solution engineering at Replicon, who states, “There will be questions; be accessible and provide clarity on priorities, milestones, performance goals and more. Outline each team member's availability and ensure you can reach them when needed" (Gurchiek, 2020). By having a clearly defined and communicated set of expectations, employers can foster a sense of responsibility and commitment. Balance organization and flexibility SHRM also advocates having a “concrete plan” but also incorporating “flexible hours to maintain consistency.” Allow employees to enjoy the flexibility that working from home offers while still maintaining concrete plans and expectations that ensure deadlines are met and projects are completed. Optimize communication and connection Examine how your methods of communication might need to change when managing the remote workforce. For example, SHRM states that long meetings might not be productive for the remote workforce. Instead, they advocate “short virtual huddles” or “check-ins” that are targeted, fast, and effective (Gurchiek, 2020). Communication and collaboration should also be clear between employees and managers and among employees themselves. This can remedy the potential lack of mentorship that is notable in the remote workforce (Woods & Ma, 2023). SHRM recommends examining which “communication tool best fits the team’s culture—e-mail, texts, phone calls, video chats,” etc. as all offer different benefits and drawbacks. Examine which is the most effective for your organization and encourage employees and managers to use the chosen tool effectively. This may require offering training courses. In terms of culture building, many remote employees report feeling “isolated and disoriented” at times. To mitigate this, employers can “share positive feedback, open a fun chat channel, or try and ‘grab coffee’ ” together via video conferencing (Gurchiek, 2020). Strategic hiring As previously mentioned, some individuals have taken advantage of the remote employment opportunity. Some have even participated in “dual employment,” working full-time for two organizations at the same time. See our insights article on dual employment, “Eliminating Employee Time Theft: How to Prevent Dual Employment.” While remote employment monitoring can prevent this, it is vital to hire those who display traits essential for remote work success. These traits include: Effective communication, particularly written communication due to the necessity of emails and instant messages. Time management and self-discipline are paramount, given the autonomy remote work offers. Adaptable problem-solving skills can aid in navigating technical glitches or project roadblocks independently. Digital literacy, including proficiency in various collaboration tools, further benefits remote interactions. A strong sense of accountability, coupled with a proactive approach to tasks, can further protect the productivity of a remote employee and business. Key takeaway In the ever-evolving post-pandemic landscape, adeptly managing remote teams is a vital skill for executives. By considering the optimal work model, recognizing the benefits of remote work, implementing monitoring tools, establishing clear expectations, balancing structure and flexibility, optimizing communication methods, fostering connection and culture, and making strategic hiring decisions, executives can navigate the complexities of remote work management with confidence and efficiency. - Navigating CEO Transitions in the Shifting Landscape of Mergers and Acquisitions
The "M&A Midyear Report 2023: It Takes Two to Make a Market” report published by Bain & Company on July 11, 2023 indicates a 44% decline in global M&A value, January through May 2023. However, the report views this as a temporary slowdown rather than a permanent shift, noting that buyers are actively seeking to enhance their strategic positions amid uncertain times. While industries exhibit varied conditions, the report advises prudent preparation and diligence, anticipating a faster-than-expected market recovery, favoring well-prepared buyers and sellers poised to take action when conditions improve. With a market recovery seemingly favoring well-prepared buyers, businesses venturing into potential mergers or acquisitions face a critical consideration regarding their CEO's role, especially amidst an uncertain future. As such, this article tackles the dilemma posed in a Quora post: "My company is undergoing acquisition, and I've been informed that I'll be substituted as CEO. However, I have the option to retain a different position if I choose. What's the best course of action?" Decoding CEO role transitions: Insights from Severin Sorensen Navigating through the intricate landscape of mergers and acquisitions requires a careful examination of the implications and possibilities that arise, particularly for key leadership positions. The prospect of an impending change in leadership, especially at the CEO level, can reverberate throughout the organization, impacting morale, culture, and the company's overall trajectory. Severin Sorensen's enlightening response to the Quora post sheds light on the multifaceted considerations that come into play when confronted with such a decision. Drawing from Severin's insights—which have garnered a notable 500K views and 900 upvotes—it's evident that a change in leadership structure during an acquisition isn't merely a binary decision of staying or leaving; it's a complex evaluation of personal aspirations, alignment with the company's future direction, and a deep understanding of how the CEO's skills can best contribute to the newly formed entity. The opportunity to transition to a different role within the organization presents a chance for the CEO to leverage their expertise in a way that complements the evolving needs of the company. The notion that this change is not a definitive endpoint, but rather a juncture that necessitates careful assessment, resonates with the broader context illuminated in Bain & Company's "M&A Midyear Report 2023: It Takes Two to Make a Market." The report's recognition of the temporary nature of the current M&A slowdown and the advice to be well-prepared for the eventual market upswing finds parallel in the CEO's situation. While the CEO may be facing an uncertain role transition, it's crucial to view this phase as a part of a larger trajectory, one where adaptability, foresight, and strategic planning become invaluable assets. As the market landscape undergoes fluctuations and the dynamics of acquisitions evolve, the decision concerning the CEO's role holds significance not only for the individual but for the organization as a whole. This article seeks to provide a thoughtful exploration of the decision-making process, guided by Severin Sorensen's insights. It's a reminder that while change may be unsettling, it can also be an opportunity for growth and alignment with the company's future potential. The context for replacing a CEO When a company is on the brink of acquisition and the acquiring entity expresses a desire to replace the current CEO, it signifies more than just a change in leadership. Severin's answer highlights the underlying message: the acquiring party may not believe in the current CEO's ability to take the company to the next level. Additionally, the offer to remain in a different role might be more of a diplomatic gesture to maintain harmony during the transition rather than a genuine acknowledgment of value. The intricacies of the situation Severin's advice delves into the nuances of the situation, helping individuals in such positions navigate the crossroads with greater clarity. Here are some key points he emphasizes: Evaluate your value: The acquiring company's not emphasizing your indispensability for the company's success carries meaningful implications about how they perceive your value. If they truly recognized your importance, they would have made a point to ensure your continued involvement to uphold client relationships, institutional knowledge, and overall continuity with care. Consider the big picture: The acquiring company's not placing a strong emphasis on your ongoing presence for the company's success conveys a nuanced message about their perception of your value. If they truly appreciated your importance, they would have made a point to express their desire for your continued involvement to uphold client relationships, institutional knowledge, and overall harmony. This recognition would reflect the positive impact you've had and the caring role you've played within the organization. Ownership of capital, passion, and zeal: If you possess the resources to propel the company forward and still carry the heartfelt enthusiasm to nurture its growth, it's a vital moment to explore alternative pathways. Among them, there could be equity buyers who genuinely recognize your contributions and sincerely wish for you to remain an integral part of the journey, reflecting the impact you've had. The fit factor: Severin suggests that if the new ownership doesn't resonate with your vision, values, and aspirations, it might not provide the most conducive atmosphere for your ongoing engagement. Being associated with a company that doesn't fully recognize your expertise could potentially limit the positive influence you could bring. Powerful questions to ask The provided questions are designed to delve into different facets of the scenario, taking into account individual objectives and harmony with the company's trajectory. Their purpose is to facilitate a well-considered choice that optimizes the potential for personal development and meaningful influence amid the changing organizational environment. Assessing value and contribution How do you perceive your value to the company's success and growth? What factors do you believe the acquiring company considered when offering you an alternative role? If your involvement was essential for the company's future, do you think they would have explicitly required you to stay in a leadership role? Alignment and vision How aligned are your aspirations for the company with the acquiring entity's vision for its future? Have you taken the company as far as you believe it can go under your leadership? If not, what additional potential do you see? Do you sense any dissonance between your energy, passion, and the company's trajectory moving forward? Ownership and influence What resources, capital, or expertise do you possess that could contribute to the company's growth even if you're not in the CEO role? How much influence would you have in a different role compared to your current CEO position? Is this level of influence aligned with your goals? Cultural and vision fit How well do you perceive your personal values and aspirations aligning with the culture and vision of the acquiring company? If the new ownership doesn't fully appreciate your expertise, how might that impact your ability to make a positive impact on the business? Long-term strategy Considering the potential market recovery, what do you envision for the company's trajectory over the next few years? Can you identify ways in which your skills could complement the evolving needs of the newly formed entity, even if it's not as CEO? Personal growth and goals How does the possibility of staying in a different role align with your long-term personal and professional goals? In what ways might this situation, challenging as it is, provide an opportunity for your growth and development? Decision-making process What criteria or factors are most important to you in making this decision about your future role? How might the potential impact on morale, culture, and overall company trajectory influence your decision? Considering alternatives Have you explored other options outside of the acquiring company that align with your expertise and aspirations? How open are you to exploring new avenues for your career if staying in a different role within the organization isn't the best fit? Short-term vs. long-term perspective How can you balance the short-term uncertainty with the potential for long-term growth and impact? Embracing change How comfortable are you with the idea of change, both personally and professionally? What support or resources do you need to make an informed and confident decision about your future role? The main takeaway Severin Sorensen's advice serves as a guiding light for entrepreneurs facing the challenging scenario of being replaced as CEO during an acquisition. His response emphasizes the importance of self-assessment, business evaluation, and alignment with the acquiring entity's vision. Severin's insights underscore the need for leaders to take stock of their aspirations and the value they can contribute to the business. Ultimately, the decision to stay in a new role after being replaced as CEO is a pivotal one that requires a deep understanding of one's goals and a clear-eyed view of the company's future prospects.
